UL 142 skid storage tanks vs standard skid storage tanks

19 02 2009

This next entry will try to explain the differences between a standard skid tank and a UL-142 tank.

Before you ask me, I cannot make copies of the Ul-142 code, it is copyrighted and it is too long to display.  Each copy is designated to the fabricator with its own serial number.  You can purchase the book directly from Underwriters Laboratory yourself.

When looking at the differences, we simply follow the UL recommendation.  There are parameters in how you weld, how you do the overlapping, how you secure the ports and fittings on the tank, and how far the ends stick out.  I am over simplifying in this example, but it is just a matter of following procedures within the code.  Last, you will also find a name plate with the manufacturer’s name, serial number, and UL label in ‘gold’.

As far as accessories, these tanks come with a 1x-standard vent, 1x-emergency vent, fill cap as you can see in the pictures.  When you request, double wall UL 142 tanks, then 2x- emergency vents will be included.

I get asked about inventory quite a bit, so to answer this questions.  We normally stock single and double wall Ul 142 tanks up to 3000 gallons.  Anything above that, will be built in accordance to your needs.

Take a look at the pictures and email me under the “contact us” tab with any questions or requests.

Different Types of Fuels we will find at gas stations

13 02 2009

I found this article very interesting, in regards to what we should expect to find at the pump in the very near future.

Filling stations nowadays are gearing towards having diverse types of fuels available instead of just gasoline and diesel. In the future the filling stations will have many options for a vehicle owner.

SUVs won’t be the only vehicles clogging up the drive at your local filling station. Soon you’ll have vehicles powered by electricity, hydrogen, natural gas and more.

Polyethylene Storage Tanks

13 02 2009

Everyone once in a while we are drawn into a turn key project with Poly Tanks, as they are more commony known in the industry.  I have personally been around them quite a bit, with different applications.  These tanks come in vertical or horizontal formats, standard wall or heavy wall.

The following project turned out to be a firsy for us, anda challenging one for that matter.  I cannot go too much into details as to the full scope of the project, for many reasons.  But what I can tell you is that we managed to engineer a portable skid platform with a cone bottom tank. electronic components, pump systems, and other proprietary components.

Most of the time, it is not us coming up with these conceps.  Call them far fethced, call them crazy, but the bottom line is that the true innovators and thinkers happen to be our customers.  We simply follow a plan, engineer it, and execute it.   Feel free to drop me a line…andyd(at)tankservice(dot)com

Why is Diesel fuel so high? Part III, follow up…

26 11 2008

I thought it was interesting enough to post the following response from an insider.

“All of the points I’ve read here are true but nearly all have nothing to do with the price of diesel. I work for a small refiner and my experience is that the price we fetch for our products(diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, etc) is only indirectly connected to the cost of production. We and every other refiner I know try to maximize profit by charging as much as we can, and we raise prices until we lose sales or market share to a competitor. That is good business practice. Likewise, if we are being undersold, we lower prices to get that market share back. It has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of producing diesel vs. gasoline.
So, why is diesel so pricey? First, the cost of crude oil gives all refiners the same incentive to raise prices to recover that cost w/o losing sales. Second, diesel demand is literally exploding. Due to energy and tax policies in Europe, more than 50% of new vehicles there are diesel. Also, diesel is an industrial fuel, and China and India are industrializing very quickly – think trains, big trucks, construction equipment, electric turbines, etc. If diesel prices in this country were any lower, the fuel would be snapped up, loaded on ships and exported overseas as a less expensive alternative to domestic supplies in foreign countries. So, diesel prices here are just where they need to be – as high as possible without inviting imported competition yet still high enough to discourage exportation to the high-demand international market. The actual cost of refining has very little to do with this pricing mechanism.”

Storage Tanks- Do I need UL142 design, Part II ?

25 11 2008

Interesting enough, this seems to be a very popular topic.  So, let’s do a follow up to an email that came in recently.  The question was relating to building a UL142 tank with a capacity of roughly 340,000 Liters ( 89820 US gal).

The answer was no.  UL142 caps its capacity right around 190000 Liters, so this specification would not apply on a tank that could not be shop fabricated.  Anything larger (in the US) than 190,000 Liters is considered a “built on site” tank; where all parts and pieces are shipped and crews assemble the complete package.

So, if UL142 does not apply here; what is the correct code?   The American Petroleum Institute (API) directs us to the API 650 code or its predecessor, API 12C.  API 650 will supersede the UL-142 code for tanks larger than 190,000 Liters ( approx 50,000 US gallons).

There you have it, keep the emails coming and thanks for posting.

US Steel prices are falling

12 11 2008

What a roller coaster this has been, steel prices are falling after climbing to all time record.  I have read that in certain markets, they are actually tumbling down.  I was talking to a good friend and we both agreed that the Industrial sector is slowing down, paired with the recent credit crunch and all the negative speculation we hear and see from the media.

Just today, shares of steel fell hard.  Why?  Simply because the ongoing global financial crisis that keeps cutting demand.  All this is a result from production cut backs and inventories becoming more expensive to maintain.

My own personal opinion on what has been going early in the year  we saw continuous price increases in our industry, goes back to the raw steel suppliers not wanting to release the raw materials, causing a perceived shortage.  It truly was not a shortage as you and I would understand it; but rather a tactic to create a false alarming sense of lack of supply.  hmm?

Now, I say this because currently we are seeing a lot suppliers hurting to unload what they had purchased in large quantities during the last few months.  It was cheap insurance, a short term lived investment.  So now that production/demand have taken a sharp down turn; their current inventory (investment) is dragging them down.  This is all very intersting to see how steel has already dropped more than 0.35 cents/lb only in the last couple of months and I believe it will continue to fall even more.

So, there you have it.  Perhaps a little controversial.  But when you look at the fourth largest economy, China; and you look at their manufacturing activity slowing down, you cannot question the fact that we are entering into a world wide slow down (recession?).  I am very intrigued to see what is yet to come next year and what factor(s) will come in play to ignite the slowing world economy.

I welcome comments, let me know what your thinking.

Andy

API 12F Tanks – PDF file

6 11 2008

This seems to be a very common question, what type of nozzles are placed on API 12F tanks?  Well, the stock 400 BBL or 16,800 gal gallons available have different fittings.  To make it simple, I have uploaded the folloing PDF file for your own use.
